Conservation internship
Caere, Italy

May 14 - June 1, 2016, the Department of Classics at Queen's
University will conduct archaeological excavations at Caere, an
ancient Etruscan city in central Italy. Located close to Rome
Airport (Fiumicino) and adjacent to the modern town of Cerveteri,
the site is associated with the nearby necropolis of Banditaccia, an
intact Etruscan cemetery that is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Art Conservation Program at Queen's will operate the field
conservation laboratory at Caere. We are currently looking for a
conservation intern, preferably a graduate student specializing in
archaeological materials, to complete our conservation team.

Responsibilities of the internship will include:

Performing conservation treatments on excavated objects, chiefly
ceramics, terracottas, glass, stone and metals, in the field
laboratory. Some on site work may be required e.g. excavating
    and block lifting fragile artifacts

Recording excavated objects using digital photography and
written and digital documentation. Knowledge of Filemaker Pro
    would be an asset

Constructing storage containers for fragile objects

Participating in outreach activities such as open houses in the
    field conservation lab

The conservation interns are expected to participate in activities
that occur on site e.g. weekly trench talks as well as weekend
events including day trips to Rome and other sites in the region.

For further information on conservation at the site, please contact
Professor Krysia Spirydowicz, Director of the Field Conservation
Laboratory. Detailed information on archaeology at Caere can be
found on the project web site:
