Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship in Objects Conservation
Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco

The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (FAMSF) is offering a
full-time two-year advanced postgraduate fellowship in the
conservation of objects for the period of September 1, 2016 through
August 31, 2018.

FAMSF comprises two museums, the de Young and the Legion of Honor.
The Museums' holdings consist of over 20,000 objects that span
across many world cultures; from objects found in early Egyptian
burials to works by contemporary sculptors.

The Mellon Objects Fellow, will work on the research and analysis of
several deteriorating European enamels using the Nano Technology
laboratory at Stanford University to do the analytical work that
will result in a publication. In addition they are to do careful
analysis of past treatments of a mid 18th century house altar from
Munich that features a porcelain crucifixion scene by Franz Anton
Bustelli. A broader based project involves the documentation of the
porcelain collection creating a database of marks and their
identification. The applicant will spend their second year working
with contemporary sculpture and more specifically researching
surface issues associated with Voltaglyph 36 by Carl Andre. The
fellow will become a valued member of the lab who will help with the
routine duties that each member performs to keep the lab running
effectively and the objects stable and in safe environments.

The fellow will work under the supervision of the Head of Objects
Conservation and collaboratively with curators and other
conservators to gain experience in all aspects of conservation
encountered in a large museum setting including activities related
to exhibition, installation, loans, preventive care, treatment
documentation, research, public programs, and publication.

The selected candidate will receive annual compensation of $43,000
plus a full benefits package. Additional funds are available for
travel and research. Candidates should be graduates of an
accredited conservation training program. Research experience is
desirable.

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until the post is
filled. Candidates are asked to submit a letter of interest and
resume, and to complete the online form, at their earliest
convenience and no later than February 8, 2016.
