The Pitt Rivers Museum is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic
conservator for a fixed-term period to join a project team as part
of the Museum's current VERVE project (2012-2017).  VERVE:
Need/Make/Use is a UKP1.6 million project, largely supported by the
Heritage Lottery Fund, to support vital conservation of collections,
sensitive refreshment of displays, and a wide-ranging public
programme of public activities celebrating the ways human creativity
and ingenuity has driven developments in techniques and
technologies.  Workshops, special events and opportunities for
volunteer and community participation form a major part of the
project, which aims to illuminate the role of design and
craftsmanship through a deeper understanding of the collections.Now
entering its fourth year (of five), the VERVE project is moving on
to its final phase.

The Conservator will be required to undertake both preventative and
active conservation of archaeological and ethnographic
material--including its transport--handling, treatment, storage and
environmental monitoring, and maintain computerised museum catalogue
database records as necessary.  The postholder will be part of the
Museum's Conservation department based in the on-site Conservation
laboratory but will also be required to occasionally work off-site
at the Museum's reserve collection storage facilities. The VERVE
Conservator will also be required to assist at public-facing events
both within and outside the Museum, and contribute to project
communications (e.g. tours, reports or blogs) as required.Full
