Conservator, Grade 1 - Frames Conservation

Hourly rate is $36.45

The Art Gallery of NSW, Conservation Department is currently seeking
a Frame Conservator or a Conservator interested in training and
working in the frames conservation field.  This is a temporary role
for a period of up to 6 months.   It is a great opportunity for a
Painting or Objects Conservator to learn new skills and progress on
a new career path.  The successful applicant will be trained in
various aspects of frames conservation and will assist the Head of
Frame Conservation with the following tasks:

    Undertake the conservation of frames for artworks from the AGNSW
    Australian, International, and Photography collections,
    maintaining international museum standards of conservation
    practice

    Preparation and documentation of frames for display, exhibition
    and loan

    Assist with day to day work flow to enable conservation
    obligations to be fulfilled, and to meet deadlines

    Answer general enquiries from AGNSW staff and the public
    regarding current projects

    Participate in research, training and development of the Frame
    Conservation program at the AGNSW

Job requirements

    Tertiary qualifications in art conservation, preferably with a
    specialisation in polychrome surfaces, objects or paintings

    Understanding of conservation ethics and philosophy

    Ability to complete conservation documentation, including
    analytical writing and photography

    Knowledge and appreciation of traditional gilding techniques and
    the history of picture framing

    Manual skills and creativity in crafts and art

    Proven accuracy and attention to detail

    Excellent communication skills

    Demonstrated computer skills

    Some experience with frames or gilded surfaces conservation
    would be an advantage
