Subject: Internships at Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden
Outdoor Sculpture Conservation Summer Internship Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden Each year the Conservation Department at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden implements a maintenance program for its outdoor sculpture collection. For the 2015 season, the Museum is offering three full-time outdoor sculpture conservation internships spanning twelve weeks between May and August. These positions are unpaid. The Sculpture Conservation Internship is designed for candidates in the pre-program phase of their conservation career. The participants will receive a hands-on introduction to outdoor sculpture conservation and maintenance and will assist in conducting gallery inspections, monitoring environmental conditions in the collection spaces, and maintaining a clean work space. Scope of Maintenance Program: The Hirshhorn Museum has more than sixty sculptures situated throughout its sculpture garden and plaza areas. The objects, which range in size from three to more than sixty feet in height, are made from a variety of materials including stone, glass, bronze, iron, aluminum, and steel. The outdoor sculptures receive annual maintenance conservation treatments that may include detergent washing and the application of protective surface coatings; occasionally, there is a need for treatments that require a greater degree of intervention. This work can be strenuous and is performed mostly outdoors in hot and humid conditions. The internship program also offers opportunities for site visits to neighboring conservation laboratories and local foundries throughout the summer. Application Processd: Applications must be completed online at <URL:https://solaa.si.edu> no later than Friday, February 13, 2015.
