Preventive Conservator Department of Conservation and Scientific Research British Museum Permanent (Full Time) Contract Salary: GBP 24,625 per annum The Museum is looking to recruit a Preventive Conservator to work as part of a team of museum professionals responsible for the delivery of a comprehensive preventive conservation programme and service for the museum's collection. This is achieved through a combination of on-going activities, special projects, provision of technical support, training, specialist advice and communication. Key areas of responsibility: To help provide a comprehensive and unified preventive conservation service for the museum's collections, in collaboration with a wide range of internal stakeholders, building and maintaining relationships to embed the Conservation Policy at all levels of the museum. To proactively support the delivery of the museum's risk management programme, through the identification and assessment of relevant risks; and to support the development of mitigation strategies together with internal stakeholders taking the museum's business needs into account. To assist in the delivery of projects as set out in the annual plan to high professional standards through the provision of expert advice, guidance and problem solving with respect to the preservation of the collection; participation in the planning of exhibitions, loans and storage. To collect, interpret and report data and evidence to inform decision making in the context of display, storage, loan and transportation. You will also help to deliver the museum's materials testing service to ensure that objects are not compromised by the presence/production of harmful compounds To assist in the preparation and delivery of training courses in preventive conservation management of the collection, environmental monitoring and housekeeping. Person Specification: The successful candidate will have a recognised professional qualification in preventive conservation, conservation or heritage science (or equivalent experience) with practical experience in preventive care of museum or heritage collections. You will have good knowledge of current conservation practice and ethical standards and a demonstrable ability to solve complex problems. The ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the museum and with a wide range of external stakeholders is essential for this post as is the ability to prioritise own workload and solve complex problems.
