Assistant Paintings Conservator Museum of Fine Arts, Boston The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston seeks a full-time Assistant Paintings Conservator to fill a 2-year term position beginning late fall/early winter 2014. Under the direction of the lab head, the Assistant Paintings Conservator will undertake thorough technical examination and treatment of a large-scale, seven-panel, late Byzantine (possibly Cretan-Venetian) altarpiece. Note that the majority of this treatment will be carried out in a studio space visible to the public. Essential functions: undertake treatment and research of painting; interact and communicate with visitors directly and through "new media;" document object condition and conservation work in writing and through photography, in accordance with departmental standards in collections database system; contribute to research, reports, lectures, and scholarly articles for the project. Qualifications: applicants should have a Master's degree (M.A. or M.S.) with a specialization in paintings conservation from a recognized conservation training program; at least one and a half years of post-training experience is required; comfort with working in a studio visible to the public and with interacting with the public is essential; structural as well as aesthetic treatment skills are required for this challenging project; strong in-painting skills desirable; ability to work and excel as part of a team and in a rapidly-paced environment required; excellent written, photo documentation, and communication skills are essential.
