Project Conservator The Oriental Institute University of Chicago The Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago seeks an experienced archaeological objects conservator to work in Kabul, Afghanistan as part of an ongoing, major cultural heritage project to create an electronic inventory database and to assess and rehouse archaeological collections (2013 - 2015). The candidate should be experienced with the conservation of a variety of materials, including but not limited to metals, stone, stucco, ivory and ceramics. As part of an international team, the candidate will work closely with Afghan conservators in the conservation assessment and rehousing of the collections in conjunction with registrars and IT specialists. Requirements: Ability and willingness to advise others on conservation issues is essential. Previous conservation experience either within a museum environment or on archaeological excavations is essential, and background experience in the conservation of artifacts from Afghanistan or neighboring regions of the Middle East, Central Asia, and/or India is preferable. Education: Masters degree from a recognized training program or equivalent Experience: Experience with the conservation of archaeological objects required Ability to work well within a team is essential, as is the ability to work within flexible time periods and in potentially challenging environments. Travel, accommodation, per diems, and a daily rate of pay will be provided. The work will be based in Kabul, Afghanistan. Expected residency is for a period of three months with breaks between each three month period. Knowledge of Dari and/or Pashto are desirable, but not essential. Familiarity with Filemaker Pro is also desirable, but not essential. An excellent command of spoken and written English is required.
