Subject: Lecture on likeness and authenticity in Tudor portraits
"'When you see me you know me': Likeness and authenticity in the portraits of the Tudor dynasty: Copying and replication in Renaissance Britain" A talk by Charlotte Bolland, Exhibition Project Curator, 16th century, National Portrait Gallery Grand Robing Room at Freemason's Hall 60 Great Queen Street London WC2B 5AZ Monday, 29 September 2014 Doors open at 6pm Talk 6:30pm - 8pm Close to both Covent Garden and Holborn Tube Stations. The portraits of the Tudor monarchs are perhaps some of the most familiar faces at the National Portrait Gallery. Their reigns spanned the period during which painted portraiture spread beyond the most elite institutions and into public spaces and private houses, and thus, even though artists' access to the monarchs continued to be extremely limited, their imagery diversified. This paper will examine how such an approach came to concentrate the power of the Tudor's visual presence even as the process of copying and replication ensured that the images that were created moved further and further away from a source likeness. Charlotte Bolland is Exhibition Project Curator (16th century) at the National Portrait Gallery. She is currently working on the exhibition The Real Tudors: Kings and Queens Rediscovered, which will open at the Gallery on 12 September 2014 and is the culmination of the seven year Making Art in Tudor Britain research project. This exhibition will form the core of the exhibition Les Vrais Tudors at the Musee du Luxembourg in March 2015. Charlotte studied for her PhD, 'Italian Material Culture at the Tudor Court', at Queen Mary, University of London, in collaboration with The Royal Collection as part of an AHRC funded CDA.
