Job description:  In support of the development of the new Royal
Alberta Museum, slated to open in downtown Edmonton in the fall of
2017, the Friends of the Royal Alberta Museum Society (FRAMS) is
seeking an Objects Conservator for 28 weeks, with possibility of
extension.

Job duties:

    Complete condition assessments and prepare comprehensive
    condition reports for objects selected for display at the new
    museum, stating structural and surface damages requiring
    intervention, and including future monitoring or steps for long
    term care

    Propose treatments for objects, making recommendations that
    offer the best approach, referring conservation decisions that
    have the potential to impact interpretation or that must be
    informed by historic or artistic context to responsible curator,
    and proposing alternative methods for objects too time intensive
    to treat or too fragile to display

    Develop treatment time estimates, which take into consideration
    and schedule the time required to complete identified tasks, as
    well as any associated costs

    Perform conservation treatments and thorough treatment
    documentation, in accordance with Canadian Association for
    Conservation of Cultural Property's Code of Ethics and Guidance
    for Practice

    Create conservation mounts, as required, and/or make
    recommendations for mounting and exhibition needs

    Assist with conservation lab activities directly related to the
    Renewal project

Qualifications:

    Graduate of an accredited collections conservation program, with
    minimum three or more years of experience

    Demonstrated knowledge of conservation methods and techniques,
    including treatment portfolio that demonstrate experience with
    treatment of ethnographic, social history or composite objects,
    in a range of treatment complexities

    Knowledge of and adherence to Canadian Association for
    Conservation of Cultural Property's Code of Ethics and Guidance
    for Practice

    Proven track record of providing similar services as a team
    member or contractor, with experience developing treatment
    proposals

    Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills

    Ability to work independently, to ask for clarification or
    assistance when needed, and to work effectively with department
    staff and contract conservators

    Ability to meet timelines

This is a full time, temporary position, reporting to the
Conservation Department of the Royal Alberta Museum, with
remuneration of $35/hr.
