This course emphasizes a practical approach to coatings examination,
from overall inspection techniques to spot analysis: It covers
observation with visible and ultraviolet light, solubility tests,
examination of cross-sections, microchemical tests as well as
histochemical staining methods.  Useful tips are provided for the
use of specific equipment and facilities.  Health and safety issues
are also addressed.

In addition, the course conveys fundamental information about the
primary materials used in different types of coatings, their
chemical and physical properties, as well as factors influencing
deterioration and surface phenomena.

With the help of detailed explanation of the basic information, it
is also possible to learners with little previous knowledge to get
into the subject.

During the term of the course, a diploma conservator of the
Hornemann Institute is available to all participants via phone or
e-mail.  Course oversight is provided by Prof. Dr. Gerdi
Maierbacher-Legl.

The authors: Since ten years Prof. Dr. Gerdi Maierbacher-Legl has
been directing the area of specialization Furniture and Wooden
Objects at the HAWK.  Dipl.-Rest. Julia Schultz MA and Dipl.-Rest.
Merle Stratling MA have graduated in Conservation and Restoration in
this area of specialization.

The E-learning courses of the Hornemann Institute: Subject matters
have been put into multi-media form, i.e., texts are enlivened by
images, videos, animated graphics, checklists, etc.  The didactic
variety and the interactivity of these modules will boost your
motivation.The modules facilitate individual studying with regard to
time management, learning speed and the depth of knowledge you wish
to achieve.  You can check your personal progress with the help of
tests.  While solving test problems, you can use your acquired
skills.  Glossaries, bibliographical references and the integration
of available Internet resources will supplement the teaching
materials.
