Subject: Call for participation--Workshop on big data management
Call for participation, and availability of NSF travel awards for students 2014 IEEE Big Data Management Workshop Hyatt Regency Bethesda Bethesda, Maryland 20814, USA Big Data Conference: October 27-30, 2014 Workshop: October 27, 2014 Timeframe: 8:30 am - 6 pm Implementing digital preservation processes (such as migration, transcoding, metadata extraction, big transfers, etc.) for big digital collections is a big data problem. This workshop introduces practical skills required for working in an HPC (high performance computing ) environment to data curators, archivists and preservationists with no prior HPC experience. First hands-on workshop on leveraging high performance computing resources for managing large datasets "Breaking the Big Data Iceberg" A one-day, hands-on workshop on leveraging High Performance Computing (HPC) resources for Big Data management will be held on October 27, 2014, in Washington DC. This workshop is co-located with the 2014 IEEE Big Data conference. The target audience includes, but is not limited to, data archivists, librarians, data curators, researchers, educators, and students. No prior HPC experience is required. Travel grants are available for students at U.S. Universities and Colleges. The application deadline for travel grants is August 26, 2014. During this workshop, the participants will: Get acquainted with Big Data management challenges and learn about some of the strategies to mitigate those challenges using HPC. Receive an introduction to the national cyberinfrastructure called XSEDE, and the high-end storage and computing environment at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC). Obtain access to TACC resources for participating in the hands-on sessions. Develop practical skills for defining Big Data management workflows on HPC resources. Conference Registration Fees for Non-IEEE members: $780 to $996 One-Day Conference Registration Fee (if only attending the workshop): $300 To register for the workshop and the conference, click here or visit <URL:http://www.cvent.com/events/2014-ieee-international-conference-on-big-data/event-summary-9d5cf12bec8841cda01bbf4af924494b.aspx> If you are only interested in attending the workshop at the conference, then you can register for one day. However, to register for one day, you will need to specify the day for which you would like to register. The workshop is scheduled to be held on October 27, 2014. With the support from NSF, travel grants are now available to support the participation of students from underrepresented groups in the workshop and in the 2014 IEEE Big Data Conference. Consideration will be given to the applicants from groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in HPC, and Big Data. These groups include women, African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Alaska Natives, Pacific Islanders and people with disabilities. The travel grant will cover air-fare, hotel, workshop/conference registration fees, ground transportation, and per diem for the selected applicants. There are mentoring activities planned for the selected students before and after the workshop/conference. The application form for the travel grant is available at <URL:https://docs.google.com/a/tacc.utexas.edu/forms/d/1zy4L9IEbbQ8QU-k9GVs8DZvayPDYNta0YXvmYxe3n5w/viewform> The application deadline is August 26, 2014, 5:00 PM CST In order to be eligible for the travel award, a student should be studying at a U.S. University or College. Selected applicants will be notified by September 2, 2014 and should be prepared to complete their travel arrangements by September 10, 2014. Questions?
