Conservator
National Air and Space Museum

The Smithsonian Institution has a requirement for the services of a
conservation professional to perform artifact condition assessments,
documentation, treatments and treatment reports for the Kendall
Ballooning and Early Aviation Collection at the National Air and
Space Museum. The position will be for a not-to-exceed 12 month
period. All work will be performed in the Emil Buehler Conservation
Laboratory at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly,
Virginia.

The Kendall Ballooning and Early Aviation Collection is a new
acquisition assembled by Evelyn Way Kendall. This rich
international collection contains hundreds of artworks, artifacts,
books and documents related to human ventures in flight. While
encompassing early mechanized aviation, the heart of the collection
captures the history and artistic depiction of lighter-than-air
craft, from the late 18th through the early 20th centuries. The
collection holds a wide range of art prints, including ballooning
scenes, portraits of aeronauts, and designs for lighter-than-air
craft; original paintings and drawings; historic photographs of
significant events in ballooning and aviation history, including the
Wright brothers and other aviation pioneers and an array of objects
with ballooning or aviation motifs, such as china, decorative boxes,
fans, jewelry, commemorative medallions, furnishings and textiles.

Salary Range: $52,146 to $67,787 per year.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: For this position,
specialized knowledge is defined as work performing condition
assessments and remedial conservation treatments on a range of
historic objects and works of art. Experience with paper artifacts,
including prints, drawings and photographs is an additional desired
skill set.

Experience: You qualify for this position if you possess one year of
specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the
Federal Service or comparable pay band system. Part-time and/or
unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to
determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be
sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Or Education: Two full years of progressively higher level graduate
education or masters or equivalent graduate degree related to the
position.

Or a Combination: Education and experience may be combined to meet
the basic qualifications; for example, a half year of experience and
a half year of education in the field may be qualifying.

pregnancy and gender identity), national origin, political
