Position at British Library

From: Cordelia Rogerson <cordelia.rogerson<-a>
Date: Monday, July 7, 2014
Textile Conservator
Salary is UKP31,387 per annum
Full time
Fixed Term Contract for 2 years
London, St Pancras

2 years fixed term from September 2014 until August 2016

The British Library (BL) collection contains several thousand
textiles items, from book bindings to flags, banners and costume.
Due to a generous grant by the Clothworkers Foundation the BL is
seeking a textile conservator to provide a focus for the care of
textiles within the collection and raise awareness of these items
for internal and external stakeholders. The post holder will
identify the range, quantity and condition of textiles within the
collection to develop a sustainable preservation plan for textiles
within the BL to assist in planning preventive and treatment
priorities. A fragile embroidered silk military banner has already
been identified as a priority for conservation treatment by the post
holder and other priority textiles will be identified for treatment
and rehousing as appropriate. The postholder will develop and
deliver a communications plan as part of their role.

You need to have either a degree in conservation or equivalent
knowledge and skills sets, and recent practical hands-on experience
in conservation of textiles. A broad knowledge of preventive and
conservation treatments within the field of textile conservation is
essential together with the ability to diagnose conservation
problems and to develop and evaluate options for solutions. You
will work with minimal supervision and have the skills and knowledge
to plan and manage your work to ensure that deadlines are met. You
must be able to communicate effectively with people at all levels,
and be able to keep clear, detailed and accurate records of all
treatments undertaken. Some knowledge of the context of libraries
would be an advantage.

The British Library supports PACR accreditation and welcomes
applications from accredited conservators.

Closing date 17 August 2014
