From: Matija Strlic <m.strlic<-a>
Date: Friday, May 30, 2014
The Centre for Doctoral Training Science and Engineering in Arts,
Heritage and Archaeology at UCL, University of Oxford and University
of Brighton is delighted to be offering another exceptionally
exciting doctoral studentship:

"Strain modelling in historical tapestries"

This project, co-funded by Historic Royal Palaces and developed in
collaboration with IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, will investigate
the effect of environmentally-induced strains on the potential
structural deterioration of the historical textile tapestry
collections at Hampton Court Palace. The project will seek to
understand how humidity and temperature influence the strain
distribution in these tapestries based on innovative real-time
strain monitoring and analytical structural modelling. The results
of this research will inform the preservation management of these
culturally valuable objects.

Based at: UCL Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic
Engineering

Academic supervisor: Dr Rodolfo Lorenzo
Application deadline: 7 July 2014.

The UK EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Science and Engineering
in Arts, Heritage and Archaeology (SEAHA) is an 8-year initiative
(2014-2022) to establish an infrastructure to meet challenges set by
the heritage sector, industry and government. Working with heritage
and industry partners, SEAHA students will create, innovate or use
sensors, instrumentation, imaging, digital and creative technologies
to improve our understanding of heritage, to develop science and
engineering capabilities and to benefit the economy.
