Head of Conservation Smithsonian's Museum Conservation Institute. The Smithsonian's Museum Conservation Institute (MCI) is seeking a Head of Conservation, who is an accomplished conservator with a specialization in ethnographic and/or archaeological conservation, including field conservation. The Head of Conservation will supervise a staff of conservators whose mission is to conduct research and treatment in collaboration with MCI's technical studies and scientific research groups and with staff from the 19 Smithsonian museums and 8 other research centers. The Head of Conservation will provide guidance and oversight to the conservation group to ensure that MCI meets the needs of our clients, which may include examination of works art, historic and archaeological artifacts, and natural history specimens; performing conservation treatments; conducting research; advising and selecting research fellows, interns, and volunteers; and reviewing the final reports and results of studies. The successful candidate must have professional experience in developing, organizing, and leading an international training program on the preservation and/or conservation of cultural heritage and a demonstrated background in management. MCI is a scientific research center of the Smithsonian Institution with the mission to increase and disseminate scientific knowledge that improves preservation and conservation of museum collections and related material, with an emphasis on the collections of the Smithsonian Institution's museums.
