The Prevention of Theft and Fraud: What the Conservator needs to know" Grand Robing Room Freemason's Hall 60 Great Queen Street London WC2B 5AZ Thursday, 12 June 2014 Doors open at 6pm Talk 6.30pm - 8pm Speaker: Julian Radcliffe Founder and chairman of the Art Loss Register Close to both Covent Garden and Holborn Tube Stations The Conservator has an important position in their ability to help prevent the circulation of stolen and forged works of art without prejudicing their clients' interests. The Art loss Register can assist with that but further due diligence may be required. We will examine the position of the conservator in cases where the client may not know that the work has questions as to authenticity or title using a number of case studies including the ability of the database to match items after conservation. After graduating from Oxford in Politics and Economics Julian Radcliffe joined Lloyd's as an insurance broker in 1970. In 1976 he founded Control Risks to specialise in international risk management including kidnap negotiations and became a Director of Hogg Group Plc, a leading Lloyd's broker. He founded the Art Loss Register in 1990 as an initiative of the Insurance industry and the Art trade to reduce the theft of and trade in stolen art and became its majority shareholder in 2004. He is also Chairman of The Equipment Register which undertakes the same task for stolen construction equipment. He has acted as an expert witness in major international fraud, negligence and art theft court cases. He served as a Colonel in the Ministry of Defence and was awarded the OBE in 1999 and the QVRM in 2004.
