Assistant Conservator The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art Sarasota, FL Full-Time/Regular/Administrative and Professional position The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, in its affiliation with Florida State University, is one of the largest museum/university complexes in the nation. Located on an impressive 66-acre Sarasota bay front estate, the museum preserves the legacy of John and Mable Ringling, educating and enabling a large and diverse audience to experience and take delight in a world-renowned collection of fine art as well as an active program of special exhibitions; Ca d'Zan, the Ringling historic mansion; the Circus Museums; the Tibbals Learning Center; the Historic Asolo Theater; and historic architecture, courtyard, gardens and grounds overlooking Sarasota Bay. The Ringling Collections and Conservation Department is seeking an individual with demonstrated professional training and ability in painting conservation to fill the position of Assistant Conservator. Under the direction of the Chief Conservator and in accordance with the AIC Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice, the Assistant Conservator will conduct examination, documentation, research, and conservation/restoration procedures primarily on paintings, and other objects as required. This position offers an exceptional professional development opportunity in a dynamic museum setting. Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree in Art Conservation or an equivalent degree with a specialization in painting conservation; or a combination of professional training and experience in the field of Art Conservation of at least six years Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and practices of collections management to include proper handling, installation, display, storage, preservation and/or maintenance in accordance with the guidelines of the American Association of Museums and the American Institute for Conservation Knowledge of the technology of paintings in various mediums and on a range of support types Knowledge of the causes of damage and deterioration of museum collections-physical, chemical, and biological Experience applying the principles, processes, practices and ethics involved in the preservation and treatment of paintings Experience preparing detailed written condition and treatment reports Experience using photography to document object condition and treatment Experience completing, under supervision, complete conservation and restoration procedures from minor to major complexity while adhering to AIC Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice in all aspects of examination, documentation, conservation treatment, and analysis Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Security Clearance: This position requires successful completion of a criminal background check to include fingerprinting. Anticipated Salary: $35,000/year with generous Florida state benefits available.
