Associate Conservator for Paper and Book Materials The Walters Art Museum Baltimore, MD The Walters Art Museum is offering an exciting opportunity to an energetic and professional conservator to work in a very active museum laboratory that focuses on preventive collections care, treatment, research and public outreach. The Walters is a dynamic museum with collections from around the world including a legendary collection of illuminated medieval manuscripts that is a major national treasure of the United States. The Conservation and Technical Research Division staff members work collaboratively across all divisions of the museum and are committed to professional activities both nationally and internationally. Reporting to the Head of Book and Paper Conservation, the incumbent will have responsibility for: Assisting in the preventive care and treatment of works of art on paper, bound and unbound rare books and manuscripts in the collection and works entrusted to the museum Stabilizing paper and book materials so that they are available for exhibitions, loans, digitization and programming Carrying out technical research related to paper and book materials to increase the body of knowledge about the collection Executing and supervising hands-on treatments and preventive care, maintaining the highest ethical standards Promoting the Walters and conservation by participating in outreach activities Working with other conservators, contractors, students in the labs and other staff members to achieve the goals set by the Head of Book and Paper Conservation Performing other duties as assigned Requirements: MA in Art Conservation or equivalent Minimum of 5 years experience with works of art on paper as well as bound and unbound rare books and/or manuscripts; experience with book materials required; experience with parchment preferred Must have a good grounding in conservation, scientific method, materials science, and environmental science literature, art history and other subjects relevant to specialty; comprehensive knowledge of treatment methods, materials, preventive conservation principles and methodology; knowledge of ethical and practical professional standards Must be computer literate to include knowledge of Windows Microsoft Office software; excellent conservation planning, decision making and hand skills for structural and aesthetic treatment. Includes strong research, analytical and documentation, teaching, grant writing, administrative and communication skills.
