Temporary: Full-time or Part-time

The Smithsonian American Art Museum is seeking a temporary photo
conservator to work in the conservation department for a period of
less than one year.  Appointment length and schedule may vary;
funding is available for a grade 11 position with benefits.

The main focus of the position will be the examination and
preparation of a collection of Irving Penn photographs for
exhibition. This will include the conservation treatment of selected
photographs. The conservator will also examine and treat other
photographs in the collection.  The photo conservator may assist
with some paper conservation projects in the conservation lab as
work load and deadlines necessitate.

The conservator will participate in all departmental activities
including documentation, analysis and treatment for the photographic
collection. The conservator will be asked to provide general
conservation advice, assistance and training to the museum staff and
occasionally the public, on the handling, storage, loan, exhibition,
analysis and preservation of the museum's photographic collections.
The conservator will help develop guidelines for storage and
display.

Desired qualifications:

    Master's degree from a recognized conservation training program
    with a specialization in photographic materials

    Professional knowledge of preservation theory and standards of
    conservation practice

    Strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills,
    demonstrating an ability to work in a group environment

    Computer proficiency to facilitate digital capture and
    management of documentary images and information

    Strong organizational abilities

Appointment:

Position should start in the summer of 2014

    May be full-time or part-time (no less than 3 days a week

    7 month appointment if full-time (may be lengthened if
    part-time)

    An intermittent schedule for a longer time period is also
    possible but would not earn leave, holidays or benefits

    Non-federal, Trust appointment at IS-11, approximately $63,000
    on annual scale

    Benefits include leave, federal holidays, and health insurance
