Samuel H. Kress Fellowship in Ethnographic Conservation The National Museum of African Art Smithsonian Institution The National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution, is pleased to offer a Kress Conservation Fellowship in ethnographic objects conservation for a one-year appointment beginning in the fall of 2014. The focus of the Fellowship will be to examine, research, document, and treat select objects from the Museum's acclaimed Walt Disney-Tishman African Art Collection in preparation for exhibition. The Fellowship will afford the successful candidate the opportunity to expand his or her knowledge of materials commonly associated with ethnographic objects, including ivory, wood, ceramics, metals, pigmented and painted surfaces, applied surfaces, and textiles. Instrumental analysis will be available through the Smithsonian's Museum Conservation Institute. In addition, the Fellow will participate in the day-to-day operations of the conservation lab, gaining the experience of work in a small museum environment with the benefit of the facilities of a large institution. The successful candidate will be a graduate of a recognized training conservation program in the U.S. or Canada, or a U.S. citizen with a graduate degree in conservation from an overseas program. Priority will be given to applicants who have a demonstrable interest in the conservation of ethnographic materials.
