Samuel H. Kress Fellowship in Ethnographic Conservation
The National Museum of African Art
Smithsonian Institution

The National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution, is
pleased to offer a Kress Conservation Fellowship in ethnographic
objects conservation for a one-year appointment beginning in the
fall of 2014. The focus of the Fellowship will be to examine,
research, document, and treat select objects from the Museum's
acclaimed Walt Disney-Tishman African Art Collection in preparation
for exhibition. The Fellowship will afford the successful candidate
the opportunity to expand his or her knowledge of materials commonly
associated with ethnographic objects, including ivory, wood,
ceramics, metals, pigmented and painted surfaces, applied surfaces,
and textiles. Instrumental analysis will be available through the
Smithsonian's Museum Conservation Institute. In addition, the
Fellow will participate in the day-to-day operations of the
conservation lab, gaining the experience of work in a small museum
environment with the benefit of the facilities of a large
institution.

The successful candidate will be a graduate of a recognized training
conservation program in the U.S. or Canada, or a U.S. citizen with a
graduate degree in conservation from an overseas program. Priority
will be given to applicants who have a demonstrable interest in the
conservation of ethnographic materials.

Please submit a cover letter stating your interest in the position,
your curriculum vitae, and two letters of recommendation to Dana
Moffett, Senior Conservator, via email at moffettd<-a t->si< . >edu. The
deadline for application materials is May 5, 2014.

This Fellowship is supported by a grant from the Foundation of the
American Institute for Conservation, funded by the Samuel H. Kress
Foundation.
