The Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship in Paper Conservation
Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco
September 2014 - August 2016

The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (FAMSF) is offering a
full-time two-year advanced postgraduate fellowship in the
conservation of paper-based materials for the period of September 1,
2014 through August 31, 2016.

FAMSF is comprised of two museums: the de Young and the Legion of
Honor. Holdings in the Museums' Achenbach Foundation for Graphic
Arts number over 90,000 artworks. The prints, drawings,
photographs, and artists' books represent more than five hundred
years of works on paper and have particular strength in modern and
contemporary prints.

The Mellon Fellow will play an integral role in study and
preparation for a retrospective exhibition and scholarly catalogue
devoted to the work of artist Ed Ruscha (b. 1937). The conservation
focus will be an in-depth investigation into Ruscha's creative
approach to printmaking with close study of Ruscha's unconventional
screenprints of the early 1970's, many of which were made from
organic materials including baked beans, caviar, chocolate syrup,
and Pepto-Bismol. Publishable results are expected.

The fellow will work under the supervision of the head of paper
conservation and collaboratively with curators and other
conservators to gain experience in all aspects of conservation
encountered in a large museum setting including activities related
to exhibition, installation, loans, preventive care, treatment
documentation, research, public programs, and publication.
Conservation treatment will be part of the fellow's work.

The selected candidate will receive annual compensation of $43,000
plus a full benefits package. Additional funds are available for
travel and research. Candidates should be graduates of an
accredited conservation training program and have demonstrated
interest in contemporary art and printmaking. Research experience
is desirable.

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until the post is
filled. Candidates are asked to submit a letter of interest and
resume, and to complete an online form, at their earliest
convenience and no later than May 30, 2014 at
