Symposium

Technical Drawings and their Reproductions
The Hague, Netherlands
6-7 October 2014

The Book, Paper and Photographic Materials Group of Restauratoren
Nederland (RN) is organizing a symposium on 6-7 October 2014 in The
Hague. The topic of the symposium is Technical Drawings and their
Reproductions.

The term Technical Drawings embraces a large range of works, from
classical drawings on paper to structural projects on tracing paper.
Also a wide variety of reproduction processes will be discussed of
which cyanotype (blueprint) and diazotype are best known.

Technical drawings present specific challenges as they are often
produced in large quantities and poorly stored. They were treated
with low regard as they were considered to be utilitarian objects.
These collections therefore need attention, research and exchange of
knowledge.

This symposium will feature presentations providing invaluable
information on the following aspects:

    Assessing large collections

    Identifying techniques and carriers

    Challenges in conservation and restoration

    Handling and storing

Language: English

In addition to the symposium a workshop will take place for a
maximum of 8 participants on 8-9 October, 2014: "Conservation of
Tracing Paper" by Hildegard Homburger.

If you have an interesting subject that connects to topic of the
symposium, please register for giving a presentation (30 minutes) or
a snapshot (10-15 minutes)

Proposal abstracts should be sent to: tr14<-a t->restauratoren< . >nl before
31 May 2014

The abstracts will be collected and included in the symposium
handouts.

Main speakers are:

Lois Olcott Price, author of Line, Shade and Shadow: the
Fabrication and Preservation of Architectural Drawings, 2010,
which won the Historic Preservation Book Prize in 2011.
