Subject: Internship at Smithsonian Institution Libraries
A paid internship opportunity at the Smithsonian Libraries (SIL) is open to United States citizens (or permanent residents) and is designed for those who are currently enrolled (or that have graduated in the past six months) in an advanced (masters) degree program in the conservation of library materials and are interested in working in research and/or museum libraries. The book conservation internship, located in the SIL conservation lab in Landover, Maryland, is ideal for a candidate with a familiarity of library preservation issues including knowledge of the principles of book and paper conservation, historical book structures, and binding techniques. The intern will receive an overview of basic preservation needs and performing conservation treatments for library collections. Treatments may include: dry cleaning, washing, paper repair, leather consolidation, board reattachment, construction of custom enclosures. Cooperation and involvement with decision-making is necessary for treatment recommendations. The intern can demonstrate the incorporation of knowledge in book/printing history with library research needs. The goal of the Conservation Internship is to enable conservation graduate students to enhance decision-making, manual, and technical abilities. Interns focus on conservation problems in the context of a diverse museum library and are challenged to develop solutions for large collections and their intended uses for research and access. Interns may receive up to $500 per week, which is awarded to the student as a stipend. Internships are full time (35 hours per week) for six weeks. Internships typically begin in early June 2014, though exact dates are flexible.
