Carnegie Museum of Art

Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh seeks an occasional associate
conservator to undertake preservation, conservation, and restoration
treatment on assigned artwork(s) as deemed necessary, in order to
get them into safe exhibitable condition. Performs required
treatment documentation including photographs as appropriate. At the
conclusion of installation, ensures that any newly noted problems
are communicated to appropriate staff and makes recommendations for
any changes in work plan when collections are deinstalled and
packed. Develops conservation records on painted artworks in the
collection, including photographic documentation. Plans and executes
treatments of two- or three-dimensional painted artworks, including
cleaning, addressing structural problems, and compensating for
losses. Provides advice on safe environmental conditions, handling,
packing, installation and storage conditions for two- or
three-dimensional painted artworks. Maintains order and cleanliness
in the lab area. Completes work in accordance with exhibition
installation schedules. Schedule varies; employee will work on an
occasional, as-needed basis.

Position Requirements: Masters degree or Certificate of Conservation
or equivalent from conservation training program, 5-7 years
conservation experience, and advanced art conservation knowledge of
2-dimensional and 3-dimensional painted objects is necessary. Must
be able to make responsible judgments on materials and supplies used
in connection with artwork(s) treatment; must have experience
working and communicating with art handlers, preparators, and
installers. Must be able to meet tight deadlines. Strong written and
verbal communication skills are essential, including the ability to
explain techniques and give clear and concise advice on conservation
and preservation. Must demonstrate good organizational and planning
capabilities and the ability to work collaboratively and supervise
the work of others.

Physical Requirements: Position requires bending over a worktable
and lifting of some weight; some repetitive motion is expected.
