Subject: Display cases
I have been asked to look into the possibility of purchasing a portable display case for use throughout the archive service. The idea is that the case would be light-weight, lockable and compliant with current conservation standards. It would be set up within a room which is fully staffed and secure. We would use the case to display archives as part of our temporary exhibitions program. This is an aspect of the service which we hope to develop further. Our largest archive centre has two top quality permanent display cases. However, we currently have limited capacity to create displays within our satellite archive centres. We would like to address this issue, so that we can provide a more balanced offering to our visitors across the county. We do not have the finances or the space to install permanent exhibition cases in each of our centres. However, we would like to encourage people to use our search rooms and enable wider safe and responsible access to more of the unique documents in our collection. In addition, we feel that advertising a display, is a good way to advertise the service in general. (Increasingly important in these times of financial constraint). We envisage that the display case would travel between sites, although the documents within, would not necessarily do so. Can anyone make any suggestions as to the type of case which we should purchase? Does anyone know of any reputable UK suppliers? I would like to compare suppliers and costs etc. If you have any experience with regard to this type of thing, I would be happy to hear from you.
