Technical aspects of Claude Monet's paintings
Art Institute of Chicago
Wednesday February 12, 2014
1-20pm

On Wednesday February 12, 2014 between 1-20pm, a workshop on the
technical aspects of Claude Monet's paintings will take place in the
galleries of The Art Institute of Chicago, 111 South Michigan
Avenue, Chicago IL 60603. The workshop will be led by Kim Muir,
Assistant Research Conservator and Jill Shaw, Curatorial Research
Associate at The Art Institute.

In 2014, the Art Institute of Chicago will launch its first
exclusively online scholarly collection catalogue as part of the
Getty Foundation's Online Scholarly Catalogue Initiative (OSCI).
This interdisciplinary research project has helped to transform the
art historical understanding of the Art Institute's beloved
Impressionist collection via new groundbreaking technical
examinations and productive collaboration between conservators and
curatorial researchers. Muir and Shaw will discuss the
collaborative process of researching the museum's paintings by
Claude Monet as well as the institution's thoughtful effort to
present this new research in a dynamic, new online format.

"Monet at the Art Institute" is part of the "Learning to Look"
workshop series organized by the American Institute for Conservation
in conjunction with the annual meeting of the College Art
Association. First organized in 2002, "Learning to Look" workshops
bring together art historians, conservators, and artists to discuss
works of art. Led by a curator and a conservator, each workshop
focuses on the material aspects of one type of object. Past
workshops have focused on Classical art, Abstract Expressionist
paintings, Rodin sculptures, early photographs, Cor-Ten steel
sculptures, and 19th century American paintings.

The workshop will be limited to twelve participants.
Pre-registration is required.
