One-Year Conservation Student Internship
Conservation Division
National Gallery of Art

The conservation division of the National Gallery of Art is pleased
to announce it will host a single one-year paid internship for the
academic year of 2011. The internship will be devoted to
conservation treatments and related research necessary, as well as
assisting the conservation staff with loan and collection
inspections and other duties as assigned. Lectures, symposia, and
informal discussions contribute to the internship program, as do the
significant resources of the Gallery, including the library,
photographic archives, and the scientific research department.

Elligibility: Students from training programs or candidates with
equivalent training in painting or objects conservation will be
considered. Applicants must be from a recognized conservation
graduate school program and require an internship to fulfill their
degree requirements. A proven record of treatment, research and
writing ability as well as English language skills are essential to
compete for the internship. The internship will be awarded without
regard to age, sex, nationality, or race.

Application Procedure: The internships offered are under the
auspices of the education department of the Gallery and they will
process the applications. One finalist will be selected from either
painting or object conservation for a paid internship position. In
addition, a volunteer internship position may be offered to a second
candidate with outstanding qualifications. The volunteer intern
must provide support funds from the graduate program they attend, or
from other sources in order to maintain residency in Washington for
the duration of the internship. All candidates are encouraged to
apply for both the paid graduate internship and unpaid volunteer
internship. Candidates must submit separate applications for each
program.

Interested candidates must follow the guidelines on the National
Gallery of Art website. The information for both the graduate and
volunteer internship is located at

deadline for applications for the paid internship is January 6,
2011. Please note when applying for the volunteer internship, the
application deadline is May 13, 2011 and should indicate the
selection of the Fall volunteer internship.

Please do not send any application material to the Gallery's
conservation division. Direct all applications and inquiries using
the contact information on the education department's website.
