"Deacidification--- A Review Article"

Members of the Heritage Science for Conservation project at Johns
Hopkins University have recently completed a review of the history
and practice of deacidification. Not only does this article site
numerous studies that have appeared in the conservation literature,
but it also covers research that has been published in other
journals, such as Analytical Chemistry, the Paper Trade Journal, and
many others that may be unfamiliar to conservators. This Review
should be a good resource for all book and paper conservators.

One particular observation while working on this Review illustrates
the need for increased communication between conservators and
conservation scientists. On page 1967 of the Review, we write of
the argument made by Moropoulou and Zervos (2003) that aqueous
treatments can weaken the paper structure. Since many conservators
feel that washed paper seems stronger, this is a topic that requires
further discussion and/or research. We hope that this Review
contributes positively to this effort.
