Paper Conservator Museum of Islamic Art--Doha The Museum of Islamic Art, Doha--Qatar, opened to great acclaim in December 2008 it houses one of the world's most distinguished and important collections of Islamic art ranging from Spain to Central Asia and India, dating from the 7th to the 19th centuries, and encompassing arts of all kinds. Particularly important are the collections of early Qurans and other manuscripts, inlaid metalwork, carpets and textiles. The Museum is now seeking a full-time paper conservator to work as part of the Museum's Collection Division. Conservators report directly to the Manager of Conservation and will be part of a small, highly motivated team dedicated to preserving and promoting the Museum's collections. The work will include assessing, conserving and caring for the collections both on display and in store. You will be part of an interdisciplinary team of conservators and will be expected to help in other areas of the department. The Collections Division, includes the Exhibitions and Loans, Registrar, Conservation and Curatorial Departments, and is responsible for the display and safe-keeping of the collections and their documentation. The Collections Division is managed by the Deputy Director Collections, who reports directly to the Director of the Museum. The post is full-time, based in Doha, and attracts a competitive salary and benefits package. Responsibilities include: Interventive and preventive Conservation of the Museum's manuscripts and works on paper collections Surveying the collection Liaising with museum curators and other colleagues Assisting with day to day running of the laboratory Assisting with setting up exhibitions Packing objects for transport and accompanying objects in transit to other locations if required Organizing the logistics of long term projects and collaborating with other conservators. Any other activity as described by the Conservation Manager. Requirements: A recognized degree in conservation and a minimum of 2 years work experience of Middle Eastern/Islamic works on paper and parchment. Experience in mount cutting, enclosure making and re-storage essential. A good knowledge of monitoring and controlling the environment in which collections are stored or displayed. Must be computer literate and have a working knowledge of File maker Pro or similar databases. Familiarity with condition surveys with the ability to undertake same Ability to work within a team, be flexible and also self motivated.
