Steve's publications are on the structure of paper and its properties, related to the three stages of papermaking: forming, pressing and drying. He has been at the University of Manchester, and its predecessor UMIST, since 1980 (except for a period of seven years working in the industry) and he studied for MSc and PhD degrees during this period. Steve has been Chairman of the last three Fundamental Research Symposia, the prestigious paper science conferences held alternately at Oxford and Cambridge Universities.
