Preservation Librarian The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is searching for a qualified professional to lead our preservation program. Responsibilities: The Head of Preservation administers and further develops the University Library's preservation and conservation program. Working with Library collections in all formats, the position coordinates preservation policy for analog and digital materials, oversees the Library's preservation operations, and collaborates with other faculty and staff to improve preservation policy and operations. The Head will directly oversee preservation reformatting, the media preservation program, and analog preservation and conservation services (led by the Head of Conservation). The incumbent will also work with other units and groups in the University Library and Campus that acquire, create, preserve, and provide access to digitized or 'born-digital' materials (including Digital Content Creation, Office of Information Technology Planning and Policy, Repository and Scholarly Communication Services, and University Archives, among others) by developing and coordinating a Library-wide digital preservation program and associated services. In addition, the incumbent will work closely with the University Library's Assistant Dean of Facilities to address issues that arise in the management and maintenance of the University Library's physical plant, represent the University Library to external organizations such as the CIC (Committee for Institutional Cooperation), and aggressively seek funding opportunities in support of these efforts. This position reports to the Associate University Librarian for Collections and Associate Dean of Libraries. This is a unique opportunity to work with the University of Illinois' renowned and extraordinarily rich collections. We seek innovative leadership in moving our preservation program forward. Both the Library and campus are firmly committed to supporting preservation initiatives, as evidenced by the recent establishment of the John "Bud" Velde Endowed Professorship in Preservation Administration in 2005 and the Library's successful record of securing grants and donations to support the Preservation and Conservation Program. Qualifications: Required: ALA-accredited MLIS or a similar advanced degree and a minimum of two years professional experience in preservation administration; progressive administrative responsibility for a comprehensive preservation program; knowledge of and experience in critical issues in preservation; familiarity with current trends in digital preservation management and related issues; supervisory and budgetary experience; evidence of successful collaboration on major projects. Successful candidates will demonstrate evidence of research orientation, strong record of public service, and ability to meet university standards for appointment as Assistant, Associate, or Full professor of library administration. Preferred: Five or more years professional experience in preservation administration; evidence of direct engagement in digital preservation management activities in past employment; evidence of successful experience in obtaining and administering grants from federal granting agencies and private foundations. Salary, Rank and Honorific Title: Salary is commensurate with credentials and experience, and the successful candidate is to be appointed at the rank commensurate with their qualifications. Librarians have faculty status, and must demonstrate excellence in librarianship, research, publication, and university/professional/community service in order to meet university standards for promotion and indefinite tenure. Appointment rank will be determined by the campus Committee on Promotion and Tenure. This position also carries the potential for appointment with a named professor/fellowship. The successful candidate may also receive an appointment as the "John 'Bud' Velde Professor of Library Preservation" (for eligible associate or full professors) or the "John 'Bud' Velde Fellow in Library Preservation" (for eligible assistant professors). Appointment to this named position will be made in accordance with campus procedures for appointment of named positions. Such named positions carry an additional salary stipend as well as discretionary funding to be used by the candidate to support their professional activities or those of the university. Terms of appointment: Twelve month appointment; 24 work days vacation per year; 11 paid holidays; 12 days annual sick leave (cumulative up to a maximum of 240 days) plus an additional 13 days (non-cumulative) per year if necessary; health insurance, requiring a small co-payment, is provided to employees (coverage for dependents may be purchased); participation in the State Universities Retirement System is required upon appointment (8% of member's salary is withheld and is tax exempt until retirement); newly hired university employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security, and are subject to its deduction.
