Please note that the position is only open until Tuesday, November
23, 2010.

This is a great position with a very competitive salary, an
opportunity for a named professorship, and very supportive academic
atmosphere. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to
contact me.

Responsibilities: The Head of Preservation administers and further
develops the University Library's preservation and conservation
program. Working with Library collections in all formats, the
position coordinates preservation policy for analog and digital
materials, oversees the Library's preservation operations, and
collaborates with other faculty and staff to improve preservation
policy and operations. The Head will directly oversee preservation
reformatting, the media preservation program, and analog
preservation and conservation services (led by the Head of
Conservation). The incumbent will also work with other units and
groups in the University Library and Campus that acquire, create,
preserve, and provide access to digitized or 'born-digital'
materials (including Digital Content Creation, Office of Information
Technology Planning and Policy, Repository and Scholarly
Communication Services, and University Archives, among others) by
developing and coordinating a Library-wide digital preservation
program and associated services. In addition, the incumbent will
work closely with the University Library's Assistant Dean of
Facilities to address issues that arise in the management and
maintenance of the University Library's physical plant, represent
the University Library to external organizations such as the CIC
(Committee for Institutional Cooperation), and aggressively seek
funding opportunities in support of these efforts. This position
reports to the Associate University Librarian for Collections and
Associate Dean of Libraries.

This is a unique opportunity to work with the University of
Illinois' renowned and extraordinarily rich collections. We seek
innovative leadership in moving our preservation program forward.
Both the Library and campus are firmly committed to supporting
preservation initiatives, as evidenced by the recent establishment
of the John "Bud" Velde Endowed Professorship in Preservation
Administration in 2005 and the Library's successful record of
securing grants and donations to support the Preservation and
Conservation Program.

Qualifications: Required: ALA-accredited MLIS or a similar advanced
degree and a minimum of two years professional experience in
preservation administration; progressive administrative
responsibility for a comprehensive preservation program; knowledge
of and experience in critical issues in preservation; familiarity
with current trends in digital preservation management and related
issues; supervisory and budgetary experience; evidence of successful
collaboration on major projects. Successful candidates will
demonstrate evidence of research orientation, strong record of
public service, and ability to meet university standards for
appointment as Assistant, Associate, or Full professor of library
administration. Preferred: Five or more years professional
experience in preservation administration; evidence of direct
engagement in digital preservation management activities in past
employment; evidence of successful experience in obtaining and
administering grants from federal granting agencies and private
foundations.

Salary, Rank and Honorific Title: Salary is commensurate with
credentials and experience, and the successful candidate is to be
appointed at the rank commensurate with their qualifications.
Librarians have faculty status, and must demonstrate excellence in
librarianship, research, publication, and
university/professional/community service in order to meet
university standards for promotion and indefinite tenure.
Appointment rank will be determined by the campus Committee on
Promotion and Tenure.

This position also carries the potential for appointment with a
named professor/fellowship. The successful candidate may also
receive an appointment as the "John 'Bud' Velde Professor of Library
Preservation" (for eligible associate or full professors) or the
"John 'Bud' Velde Fellow in Library Preservation" (for eligible
assistant professors). Appointment to this named position will be
made in accordance with campus procedures for appointment of named
positions. Such named positions carry an additional salary stipend
as well as discretionary funding to be used by the candidate to
support their professional activities or those of the university.

Terms of appointment: Twelve month appointment; 24 work days
vacation per year; 11 paid holidays; 12 days annual sick leave
(cumulative up to a maximum of 240 days) plus an additional 13 days
(non-cumulative) per year if necessary; health insurance, requiring
a small co-payment, is provided to employees (coverage for
dependents may be purchased); participation in the State
Universities Retirement System is required upon appointment (8% of
member's salary is withheld and is tax exempt until retirement);
newly hired university employees are covered by the Medicare portion
of Social Security, and are subject to its deduction.
