Workshop on Significance Assessment
Significance International
Canberra, Australia
10-11 November 2010

The first workshop in the 'Sustainable Collections' series by
Significance International is being delivered in Canberra,
Australia, 10-11 November 2010. Significance International is a new
company established by Veronica Bullock and Roslyn Russell.

This workshop is designed especially for historians, who are
increasingly invited to prepare significance assessments by
collecting organisations. Significance assessments of whole
collections are often required by funding/granting bodies as a
prerequisite for future grants.

At the end of this two-day workshop participants will be able to:

Better understand the 'primary source' value of objects and
    collections

Integrate the multiple meanings of collections into broader
    historic themes

Successfully apply the 'Australian method' for significance
assessment, including generating a 'statement of significance'
    for an object

Confidently approach whole collection significance assessment

Participants are asked to bring along an object with which they are
familiar, including any documentation of its background.

Cost: $AUD550.00 for Australian residents, $AUD500.00 for
non-Australian residents. Includes morning and afternoon breaks and
a 'Certificate of Completion'.

Maximum of 12 participants per workshop. Registrations are being
accepted until Friday 5 November 2010.

About the organizers: At its launch, the Significance International
provides local, national and international services in the areas of
significance and preservation assessments of collections, as well as
more general collections and strategic planning guidance.

Offerings will expand from early 2011 to include the development of
sustainability indicators for individual collecting organisations,
collections mapping guidance, and the provision of research services
for cultural heritage inquiries. For more information about the full
