Post-Doctoral Research Associate, The Metropolitan Museum of Art New York Deadline: November 8, 2010 The Department of Scientific Research at the Metropolitan Museum (the Met) in collaboration with the Department of Physiology at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons has an immediate opening for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate position. The successful candidate will work on an NSF research project applying immunological and bioanalytical techniques to the identification of proteins and polysaccharides in art, archaeological and ethnographic objects. These studies will include investigations of the influence of pigments, ageing and processing on the physical state of proteins and gums used as art materials, the development of reliable identification techniques and further investigation of species identification. The candidate will be involved in a team oriented research project with extensive interaction with other scientists, undergraduates and art conservators. It is expected that candidates will interact effectively with colleagues at Columbia and the Met and participate in grant proposal writing and undergraduate research supervision. In addition the candidate will interact with scientists at the Met and gain exposure to scientific research of artworks. The initial appointment will be for 1 year to be extended for an additional two years if suitable. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Immunology or a related field. The candidate should have a background in protein and polysaccharide chemistry, MALDI or LC/MS, proteomics and immunology, and familiarity of aptamer techniques as well as an interest in the scientific research of art related materials, especially in a museum environment. Note: work authorization in the United States in Required. Anticipated start date: Immediately.
