The C&CC Department consists of several sections: Book and Paper Conservation, Preventive, Exhibitions and Packaging and Display Services. We are looking for an experienced book and paper conservator to join the Book and Paper Section for a 7-month contract providing cover for maternity leave. Your main activities will focus on interventive conservation treatments to specific collections, which will comprise both manuscripts and printed material, and may include bound volumes on paper or parchment, works on other materials such as papyrus, birch-bark and palm leaf, photographs, and maps. You will prepare condition reports and treatment proposals, and give advice and training to members of staff and readers on handling and use of the collections. Some work on preparation and installation of exhibitions will be required, and you may be involved in courier duties. Candidates should have a recognised qualification in conservation of books, paper or library materials, or equivalent training and experience; detailed knowledge and experience of high-level conservation treatments on book, paper and related materials; ability to work effectively and constructively both independently and as part of a team, as well as to alter working patterns to meet organisational needs. It is desirable that applicants are accredited under the Professional Accreditation of Conservator-Restorers (PACR) scheme. Non-accredited applicants will be expected to be working to the standards required by accreditation. Due to the nature of this post, candidates will be required to undertake a Disclosure Scotland check as well as a financial background check. The possession of a criminal record or poor financial background will not necessarily prevent an applicant from obtaining this post, as all cases are judged individually according to the nature of the role and information provided.
