San Diego Museum of Man

The San Diego Museum of Man is currently seeking to hire a
Conservator who will have overall responsibility for the
preservation, safety and restoration of Museum's
ethnographic/archaeological collections that number in excess of
100,000. Specifically, conservator has primary responsibility for
stabilization, repair, and treatment of artifacts using current
invasive and non-invasive conservation techniques.

Job Requirements

    Develop creative solutions to clean, support, and repair
    sensitive objects.

    Evaluate object stability and stabilize objects as necessary.

    Construct storage supports and assist with the storage of
    objects.

    Assist in the monitoring of storage conditions with the aim of
    keeping objects in a stable condition.

    Recommend treatment proposals with cost estimates for treatments
    to halt artifact decay and deterioration.

    Recreate historically-accurate finishes, such as mixing
    traditional paints from scratch or reconstructing archaeological
    ceramic material.

    Maintain appropriate conservation standards within the
    specialist area of archaeological and ethnographic collections.

    Develop Museum's conservation plan.

Experience, Education, or Skills Required: A master's degree from a
recognized art conservation program with a specialization in objects
is required, along with substantial practical experience. A degree
in anthropology and/or experience working with anthropologists or
native communities is preferred. Candidate should have excellent
organizational skills with attention to detail, strong communication
and interpersonal skills, demonstrated knowledge and skills in the
care and conservation of anthropological collections and all types
of material culture, and the ability to manage multiple projects
simultaneously, on time and on budget.  Candidate must be able to
work well in both team environment and independently. Send
