Scientist - Amara West Archaeobotanist Dept Conservation and Scientific Research British Museum Fixed Term; 12 months The British Museum is currently recruiting a scientist to work within the Department of Conservation and Scientific Research, in close collaboration with the Department of Ancient Egypt and Sudan. The post holder will be required to undertake scientific examination and identification of seeds, grain, fruits, legumes etc, from the British Museum's excavations at Amara West in northern Sudan and document, report and publish these findings. The research will be undertaken using a range of microscopical techniques, making use of the full range of analytical equipment available at the Museum. The work will contribute to the major Leverhulme Trust funded project Health and diet in ancient Nubia through political and climate change <URL:http://www.britishmuseum.org/research/ research_projects/amara_west_research_project.aspx> In support of this work and where appropriate the post holder will also be given the opportunity to undertake scientific analysis on other related material to broaden their experience by addressing a range of curatorial and conservation enquiries within the Museum context. You will be required to produce reports, publications and presentations related to project work as well as to participate in outreach activities and to contribute to in-house lecture programmes. The ideal candidate will have a strong archaeological science background and hold a science, archaeological sciences, archaeobotany or botany degree, or equivalent. You will have considerable experience in the analysis of archaeological plant remains, particularly seeds, grains, fruits, legumes etc, experience in application and use of a range of microscopy techniques, the design of research projects, the analysis of related plant remains e.g. phytoliths, and some experience in the analysis of other organic museum/archaeological objects. Good organisational, communication and research skills are essential, combined with an ability to work in inter-disciplinary project teams and to disseminate your work to a range of audiences.
