Jan Merrill-Oldham

As Harvard's Malloy-Rabinowitz Preservation Librarian, Jan
Merrill-Oldham has been the driving force in developing the
Library's nationally and internationally renowned preservation
programs.  It is to Jan's credit that Harvard's libraries benefit
from a carefully coordinated relationship between collections
conservation and special collections conservation; state-of-the-art
conservation labs in Widener and the Weissman Center; a
multi-faceted special collections program for the conservation of
books, paper, photographs and film; a preservation review program; a
comprehensive imaging services program; and a proven Library
Collections Emergency Team.

We are writing today to tell you that unfortunately, due to
long-term illness, Jan is unable to continue her Harvard service.

To ensure that Harvard's preservation programs move forward with
that same strong leadership and vision, we have begun to plan for a
transition.

In the coming months, Brenda Bernier will continue to serve as the
interim head of HUL's Weissman Preservation Center under the
direction of Helen Shenton. In HCL, Bill Comstock and Heather
Kaufman will provide leadership respectively for Imaging Services
and Collections Conservation under the direction of Rebecca Graham.

Later this fall, a new leadership position will be posted.

As details of the transition and the new position develop, more
information will be forthcoming.

The October issue of Harvard University Library Notes will cover
Jan's many accomplishments and offer reflections on the impact of
her important work.
