Full time fixed term contract post for 13 weeks from 4 January - 1
April 2011

Location: Horniman Museum at Forest Hill and at the Study
Collections Centre (SCC) at East Greenwich as required.

Hours of work: 35 hours per week (Mon - Fri) usually 9am - 5pm

Salary UKP25,203 per annum pro rata

The Horniman Museum is offering a short term Conservator contract.
This presents an excellent opportunity for an experienced and
enthusiastic objects conservator to work in the Collections
Conservation and Care Section.

The work will concentrate on carrying out assessments, conserving
and preparing objects for a new temporary exhibition due to be
installed in March 2012 in association with Olympic year called 'The
Body Adorned'.

The post will be primarily based in the Collections Conservation and
Care Section at the Horniman Museum, but will also involve work at
the Study Collections Centre at Greenwich. The section is
responsible for the conservation and care of the Museum's
collections of Ethnography, Musical instruments and Natural History.
The Museum is set in sixteen acres of beautiful gardens in Forest
Hill, South East London.

The applicant should have a good range of experience which
encompasses the care, documentation and conservation of a wide range
of organic and inorganic objects in a museum and exhibition
environment. Please note this short term post is only open to

Job Description

Section: Collections Conservation and Care Responsible to: Head
Collections Conservation and Care

Liaises with: Collections Conservation and Care, Exhibitions,
Collections Management, Curatorial staff and other staff as required
Main purpose of Job: To assist the Head of Collections Conservation
and Care primarily in assessing, condition reporting and conserving
specimens designated for display for exhibitions on The Body Adorned
exhibition, and other exhibitions as required.

Main responsibilities

Collections Care and Management (80%)

    Undertake conservation assessments, condition reports and
    conservation and repair of objects as required according to
    designated lists and methods already devised.

    Assist with environmental monitoring and assessment of
    conditions towards the Environmental Control Strategic Study
    Review (ECSSR).

Record Keeping/Compliance with Legislation (20%)

    Carry out all duties in accordance with the Health and Safety at
    Work Act, COSHH, and other statutory requirements and agreed
    safe working practices. Assist in the use of the freezer unit or
    pest control.

    Operate and maintain conservation documentation.

Person Criteria

    A recognised qualification in objects conservation or equivalent
    knowledge, skills and experience in the conservation of a wide
    range of specimens in a museum environment.

    Practical knowledge, skills and experience in assessing and
    conserving a wide range of organic and inorganic objects and
    materials.

    Demonstrate the knowledge and skills to understand and implement
    laboratory procedures and safe working practices particularly in
    relation to H&S at work regulations and COSHH

    Ability to operate computerised data retrieval systems.

    Demonstrate the ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary
    team

    Demonstrate the ability to work independently, without close
    supervision, and to within tight deadlines
