Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship in Photograph Conservation The Art Institute of Chicago The Art Institute of Chicago is offering an advanced Fellowship in Photograph Conservation beginning in the fall of 2010. The Fellowship will be for one year with the possibility of renewal for a second and third year. The Mellon Fellow is an integral part of a very active department, and has conservation, curatorial, and administrative responsibilities. A wide range of contemporary and historic photographs will be examined, analyzed, documented, treated and prepared for loan, exhibition and storage. Opportunities also exist for long-term research, with publishable results expected. Duties: Examines and identifies photographs. Provides technical analysis of deterioration phenomena, and recommendations for treatment and preservation. Executes conservation treatments, as required. Documents all examinations and treatments with written reports and photographic illustrations. Performs proper usage of laboratory instrumentation and equipment such as densitometer and stereo microscope. Consults with curators and other conservators as needed. Recommends as to the suitability of objects for loan. Conducts publishable long-term research projects. Responds to public inquiries regarding the conservation, preservation, and exhibition of photographs. Attends to conservation needs of photographs on exhibition, with participation in installations. Monitors photographs with analytical equipment as required. Helps train staff in proper handling of photographs. Helps maintain and equip the Photograph Conservation Laboratory. Communicates with other colleagues in the field and participates in appropriate professional organizations. Qualifications: Must be a graduate of a recognized conservation training program with a clear specialization in the medium of photography, or have equivalent experience, with at least 3 years of post-graduate work. The Fellow will receive an annual salary of $33,800 with an additional allowance of $3200 for research and travel; plus benefits including health, dental, and vacation.
