Future Directions Symposium: Understanding the Physical Environment.

Introductions and Presentations: 10 am -3:15 pm

Preservation leader James Reilly, Director of the Image Permanence
Institute and others will review 25 years of research by the Image
Permanence Institute (IPI) that has produced resources and
recommendations now widely used to preserve a broad range of media.
Applications and findings in pilot projects at the Library of
Congress and other cultural institutions will be discussed.
Achievements include characterization of deterioration mechanisms in
photographic, magnetic, and optical media; tools for assessing the
condition and needs of these media; and environmental remediation.

Mr. Reilly will be joined by three IPI research scientists:
Jean-Louis Bigourdan will discuss how material research has led to
preservation storage strategies, guides and tools, Daniel Burge will
speak about standards, testing and digital print stability, Douglas
Nishimura will present information on IPI services in education and
outreach to the preservation field including seminars, internships,
technical support and web-based tools. Nancy Lev-Alexander, Head of
the Library of Congress Preventive Conservation Section will discuss
the ten-year collaboration between IPI and LOC which has led to
tools and strategies to manage the Library's preservation
environment applying principles of sustainability.
