Associate Conservator/Conservator of Asian Paintings The Cleveland Museum of Art The Cleveland Museum of Art is seeking a full-time Conservator of Asian Paintings at the Associate or full Conservator level. This position is presently available. The conservator will report to the Chief Conservator and will head the museum's Asian painting lab in its newly constructed conservation facility. The conservation facilities, completed in 2008, comprise a total of 135,000 square feet and include paper, painting, textile and Asian painting labs as well as an analytical lab and imaging and conservation preparatory studios. The new Asian galleries are slated to open in two phases, June 2013 and December 2013 and the candidate is expected to work closely with the curators of Asian paintings towards the re-installation of the galleries. During this process, the conservator will also work with many other departments in the museum, making recommendations to the design department on display and installation, as well as working actively with collections management during the installation. The successful candidate will work with various departments and staff members within the institution to care for the Museum's Asian painting collection--a comprehensive range of paintings from all periods, including hanging scrolls, screens and albums from China, Japan and Korea. Close collaboration with the curators of Asian art and other members of the conservation department is essential. Major responsibilities include the examination, analysis, documentation and treatment of paintings for exhibition, loan and acquisition. The position requires the ability to examine all Asian paintings, but major treatment should be focused on the specialization in which the candidate was trained. The Conservator/Associate Conservator of Asian paintings is expected to work with the curator(s) to oversee treatment of Asian paintings outside their area of expertise. The successful candidate will have travel opportunities as they relate functions of the department and will participate in museum wide preservation activities including gallery monitoring and collection maintenance. The successful candidate may be responsible for supervising junior staff members and fellows/interns. Requirements: Candidates must be a graduate of a recognized conservation training program or have equivalent training and have at least five years of post-graduate experience working in the conservation of Asian paintings. The successful candidate must have a broad knowledge of museum practices and collections management, a familiarity with the types and materials represented in the museum's collection of Asian paintings and a strong record of achievement in the field. S/he should have a demonstrated ability to work independently as well as successfully with others, e.g., Museum staff, volunteers, and diverse public constituencies to achieve institutional objectives and fulfill the mission of the museum. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential, as is an ability to work with databases, word processing, and other computing tools that the staff is expected to use on a regular basis. Examples of writing samples will be requested as part of the interview process. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Manual dexterity is frequently required as duties call for the handling and conservation treatment of artwork, and operation of tools and equipment.
