Associate Conservator/Conservator of Asian Paintings
The Cleveland Museum of Art

The Cleveland Museum of Art is seeking a full-time Conservator of
Asian Paintings at the Associate or full Conservator level. This
position is presently available. The conservator will report to
the Chief Conservator and will head the museum's Asian painting lab
in its newly constructed conservation facility. The conservation
facilities, completed in 2008, comprise a total of 135,000 square
feet and include paper, painting, textile and Asian painting labs as
well as an analytical lab and imaging and conservation preparatory
studios. The new Asian galleries are slated to open in two phases,
June 2013 and December 2013 and the candidate is expected to work
closely with the curators of Asian paintings towards the
re-installation of the galleries. During this process, the
conservator will also work with many other departments in the
museum, making recommendations to the design department on display
and installation, as well as working actively with collections
management during the installation.

The successful candidate will work with various departments and
staff members within the institution to care for the Museum's Asian
painting collection--a comprehensive range of paintings from all
periods, including hanging scrolls, screens and albums from China,
Japan and Korea. Close collaboration with the curators of Asian art
and other members of the conservation department is essential. Major
responsibilities include the examination, analysis, documentation
and treatment of paintings for exhibition, loan and acquisition.
The position requires the ability to examine all Asian paintings,
but major treatment should be focused on the specialization in which
the candidate was trained. The Conservator/Associate Conservator of
Asian paintings is expected to work with the curator(s) to oversee
treatment of Asian paintings outside their area of expertise. The
successful candidate will have travel opportunities as they relate
functions of the department and will participate in museum wide
preservation activities including gallery monitoring and collection
maintenance. The successful candidate may be responsible for
supervising junior staff members and fellows/interns.

Requirements:

Candidates must be a graduate of a recognized conservation training
program or have equivalent training and have at least five years of
post-graduate experience working in the conservation of Asian
paintings. The successful candidate must have a broad knowledge of
museum practices and collections management, a familiarity with the
types and materials represented in the museum's collection of Asian
paintings and a strong record of achievement in the field. S/he
should have a demonstrated ability to work independently as well as
successfully with others, e.g., Museum staff, volunteers, and
diverse public constituencies to achieve institutional objectives
and fulfill the mission of the museum.

Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are
essential, as is an ability to work with databases, word processing,
and other computing tools that the staff is expected to use on a
regular basis. Examples of writing samples will be requested as part
of the interview process.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with
disabilities to perform the essential functions. Manual dexterity is
frequently required as duties call for the handling and conservation
treatment of artwork, and operation of tools and equipment. Job
duties entail standing, walking, sitting, occasional climbing,
bending and kneeling. Specific visual abilities required by this job
include close, color, and peripheral vision.
