Head of Conservation Department Die Neue Sammlung The International Design Museum Munich Full-time position The successful candidate will be recruited initially for a fixed term of two years and later, subject to performance, on a permanent basis. Salary scale: 9 TV-L Closing date: October 15, 2010 Die Neue Sammlung - The International Design Museum Munich <URL:http://www.die-neue-sammlung.de> houses one of the world's largest and most important collections of industrial design. The large number of objects (which is around 80,000) reflects the technologies and materials developed in the course of the 20th century, attesting in particular to the use of plastics. When moving to the Pinakothek der Moderne in 2002 the Conservation Department was founded. Since that time there is a strong focus on the conservation of degraded modern materials. Researching the deterioration and preservation of the collection, the development of new conservation processes and the knowledge of original technology, the Conservation Department has become an important center for the conservation and the maintenance of design objects. The Conservation Department plays an active role in sharing knowledge with students and professionals and takes part in national and international research projects. In October 2009 the Conservation Department launched the conference: 'FUTURE TALKS 009. The Conservation of Modern Materials in Applied Arts and Design'. Die Neue Sammlung is seeking a highly qualified, motivated full time objects conservator, to join the Conservation Department. The applicant must be a graduate of a recognized conservation training programme. The ability to approach the conservation of a wide variety of materials, and to quickly and accurately assess condition, estimate treatment times, prepare treatment proposals, deliver high quality conservation treatments and documentation, sometimes to tight deadlines, are also essential. The applicant must have knowledge of preventive conservation practice relating to the care of modern collections. Work experience within the museum sector is desired. A strong interest or experience in the technology and conservation of 20th century objects would be an advantage. Furthermore the applicant should have good verbal and written communication skills in German and should be computer literate conversant with Microsoft Word, Excel and Photoshop. A working ability with digital photography is required.
