Subject: Early uses of house paints by Picasso and his contemporaries
>Symposium 2011 >"From Can to Canvas, Early uses of house paints by Picasso and his >contemporaries in the first half of the 20th century" >... >... this symposium >will be the first to deeply delve into the making of early house >paints (and other non-artists' paints) and the meanings associated >with their use by artists before 1950. Studies of Ripolin brand >house paint, said to have been used extensively by Pablo Picasso >(1881-1973) and his contemporaries will receive special attention. Now there's an interesting topic. Someone sure should cover the almost certainty that the house paints manufactured before 1960 also contain high levels of PCBs added as preservatives and fire retardants. Mercury preservatives were also used in the polymer paints until 1991 when they were finally banned. And asbestos used as a texturing and thickening agent in pre 1960 paint has screwed up the budget for many renovation projects including the one for the Guggenheim. I hope someone covers this issue. I'd do it if I wasn't as busy as a one-legged lady in an ass-kicking contest.
