Temporary part-time (August 3, 2010)

Position classification: Museum Scientist; $18.19/hr for
approximately 600 hours total.

Project description: The Environmental Design Library has received a
gift earmarked for conservation of its rare book and document
collection. A library conservator is sought to implement a
collection assessment, housing, and treatment project to address the
most urgent conservation needs of the collection.

Project schedule/location: 2 days/week in the conservation
laboratory of the Preservation Department for the duration of the
Project. The schedule and start date are flexible. Position open
until filled.

Conservator duties: For the rare materials collection in the
Environmental Design Library:

    Analyze needs and sort collection materials for conservation
    treatment

    Perform simple through complex treatments on documents and
    books

    Exercising a high degree of judgement in applying established
    conservation principles and procedures

    Communicate with staff and clients orally and in writing

    Document treatment and processing procedures

    Use and maintain specialized conservation equipment (e.g.,
    suction table, board shears, guillotine, ultrasonic
    encapsulator,  freeze dryer, fume extractor, mold abatement
    equipment)

    Compile production records and statistics for conservation
    services

Required: Training from a recognized library and archives
preservation/conservation graduate program, or equivalent. Book and
paper repair and conservation skills for treatment of archives and
special collections materials;  working knowledge of library and
archives conservation principles;  ability to work effectively as a
member of a team;  ability to work under general supervision with a
high degree of day-to-day independence;  writing skills to document
procedures;   basic competence with email and Microsoft Office
applications.
