Preparation for and response to disasters are among the most
important things that archivists can do to safeguard collections! As
recent disasters have taught us, this involves more than just
writing a disaster plan. A plan must be updated and read, and
communication with colleagues and first responders is essential. In
this workshop you are introduced to the basics of emergency
management pertaining to archivists. The four phases of a disaster
(mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery) are discussed, as
well as how to conduct a risk assessment, write a disaster plan,
prioritize collections, and sustain preparedness. In addition to
more theoretical planning, you'll get tips and tools to help you get
started.

Upon completing this workshop, you'll be able to:

    Identify the four phases of emergency management;

    Specify how you can mitigate risks associated with your
    collections;

    Conduct a basic risk assessment and write a disaster plan;

    Determine priority items in your collection;

    Establish relationships with emergency managers and first
    responders; and

    Help educate your co-workers about the importance of emergency
    management.

Who should attend? Archivists, curators, librarians, and others
responsible for collections.
