Internships, Painted Finishes Conservation
Building Conservation Associates, Inc

Park Avenue Armory is seeking candidates for second year graduate
school and post-graduate internships to perform hands-on
conservation work in two of the Company rooms at the Seventh
Regiment Armory, a National Historic Landmark on Manhattan's Upper
East Side. Large scale mock-ups are currently being created by
interns trained on site by professional conservators. Park Avenue
Armory is now seeking candidates for the full-scale work, which will
begin in September 2010 and will last for eight months.

Candidates with shorter-term availability will be considered,
however preference will be given to candidates who are available for
the entire duration. These are paid positions and professional
training on-site is included.

Successful candidates will have a strong background in the
conservation and restoration of painted finishes and demonstrable
training in the removal of overpaints from earlier painted surfaces.
A focus on architectural painted finishes is preferred.

The work will be performed in rooms designed by the firm of Pottier
and Stymus in 1880. To create the elaborate designs of the American
Aesthetic Movement, the designers employed multiple different paints
and metallics, in both stenciled and freehand work. The scope of
work includes the removal of numerous layers of overpaint to expose
the highly significant and unique decorative finishes as well as the
cleaning of some of the decorative finishes on plaster walls and
ceilings. The work will be directly overseen by conservators with
expertise in the formulation and use of solvent gels and other
methods of removing overpaints.

Park Avenue Armory is a newly launched, not-for-profit arts

of America's historic treasures and open it to the public as a
cultural center. The Armory, designed by Charles W. Clinton,
contains numerous period rooms by artists such as Louis Comfort
Tiffany, Stanford White, Herter Brothers, Sidney Stratton, and
Pottier and Stymus among others. More information on the Armory
project and photographs are available at the website for the Park
