Clothworkers' Research Fellowship
The National Archives
Kew, West London

Fixed term appointment for 12 months

UKP30,000 stipend

Can you help us to enhance our understanding of British textile
design and manufacture--from the Industrial Revolution up to the
early 1990s?

About the role: We are seeking to recruit an experienced
professional as our first Research Fellow, generously funded by the
Clothworkers' Foundation. This interdisciplinary Fellowship aims to
address questions of how to realise the enormous research potential
of The Board of Trade Representations and Registers of Design
collection. This 'museum in miniature' is a unique resource of
textile samples, gloves, socks, photographs and drawings bound in
10,358 volumes. This is a highly valuable primary source for
exploring textile design, technology and manufacture in Britain and
Europe that needs to be preserved and made accessible more widely.

The National Archives Fellowship provides a unique research
experience. Benefitting from a range of resources available at The
National Archives and the department of Collection Care, you will be
free to develop this project and work flexibly with an
interdisciplinary team of allied professionals to explore how this
valuable resource can be made available to a wide community of
users. About you

An experienced professional you will have research experience
preferably in textile conservation, textile history or book
conservation. The Fellow is expected to foster and build
collaborative relationships between conservation professionals,
academics, and the public. You will also be experienced in
conducting cross-disciplinary research, showing time and again that
you are an articulate and collaborative professional capable of
effectively managing important projects.

The National Archives is the official archive for England, Wales and
the UK government, preserving over 1,000 years of history from
Domesday Book to the present, with records ranging from parchment
and paper scrolls through to recently created digital files and
archived websites. Increasingly, these records are being put online,
making them universally accessible. The National Archives is also at
the heart of information policy--setting standards and supporting
innovation in information and records management across Government.
