Fellowships (2 positions)
Paper Conservation Laboratory
National Museum of American History

The Paper Conservation Laboratory of Preservation Services, National
Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution, is seeking two
post graduate conservation fellows to participate in the treatment
of Thomas Jefferson's The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth,
commonly referred to as the "Jefferson Bible," and two of its source
books.

The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth, created by Thomas
Jefferson, is an 81-page assemblage of passages from the first four
books of the New Testament. Jefferson cut and glued select passages
from the source books to arrange a chronological and edited account
of Jesus' life, parables, and other teachings, creating a
one-of-a-kind book to use for his own reading and personal
reflection.

Reporting to the Senior Paper Conservator, the fellowship appointees
serve on a conservation team which will:  examine the books;
document the books' current condition and structure; analyze paper,
ink and adhesives; devise a written tool that assists and documents
the treatment decision-making; perform the conservation treatment;
document in photographic and written form all decisions, materials,
and conservation techniques used in the treatment; design and
construct long-term protective enclosures for these artifacts; and
assist in the digital scanning, and exhibition of the Bible and its
two source books. The fellowship is for one year from September
2010 to September 2011 and provides each fellow with a $35,000
stipend plus $2,400 for health insurance. Application deadline is
July 23, 2010.
