Continuing Professional Development Courses West Dean College Chichester, West Sussex, England <URL:http://www.westdean.org.uk/College> Care and Conservation of Historic Floors 11-14 October 2010 Course Leader: Jane Fawcett This course will give a rare opportunity to hear from experts about some of the problems created by the steady erosion of all types of historic floor and to consider some of the solutions available for their protection and conservation. We are all aware of the damage inflicted by daily use on decorative pavements. We know the contribution made by mosaics, tiles, parquetry, marble, stone, ledger stones and engraved slabs to a historic interior whether ecclesiastical or secular. We are all concerned about the options of partial repair, cleaning and conservation in situ, or of total replacement. The extent of the loss of historical evidence, particularly in ecclesiastical buildings is, however, little understood, and the methods of recording it are often inadequate. In many cases it is now too late, and the destruction has been total. On this course, leading authorities will attempt to answer some of these questions, to weigh the demands of tourism against those of conservation, and to provide examples of what has been done, and how, where and when. Fully inclusive residential fee: From UKP459 Reading Early Woodwork 25-28 October 2010 Course Leader: Dr Damian Goodburn The aim of the course is to provide a practical introduction to the 'forensic study' of worked timber and roundwood, for conservators and others working with historic, archaeological and ethnographic woodwork, from buildings or boats to smaller portable items. Diagnostic evidence for methods of converting timber, secondary working, jointing and fastening will be examined. On Day Two dated examples of woodwork from prehistoric to pre-Industrial recent material will be investigated using a combination of informal illustrated talks and handling sessions. Participants can then get 'to grips with' a variety of samples of woodwork and tools from the Stone Age to recent folk life material. On Day Three the use of a variety of extinct tools will be demonstrated using appropriate timber and roundwood. Participants would then be able to try out selected historic and replica tools from early Stone Age/ethnographic tools of stone, bone, wood and fish skin to extinct forms of steel-edged medieval axes and a replica Mary Rose-style adze. Fully inclusive residential fee: From UKP459 Course on public engagement in conservation and conservation science--Conservation Outreach Projects 29 November-2 December 2010 Course Leader: Dana Goodburn-Brown From Barbie mummies to Benchmarks and Seats of Learning, this workshop invites participants to have a go at several examples of workshop sessions which are designed for children and family groups. The workshops are creative responses to conveying aspects of archaeological science and conservation work. Bronze Age torcs, Roman coin striking, Anglo Saxon jewellery and pattern welded swords, pigments, Egyptian cartonnage and decorative wrapping. Examples of workshops and demonstrations which have been delivered at museums, galleries and television programmes will be discussed. Feedback forms and experience from over 10 years of Medway Council and HLF funded Children's University teaching by Dana and several colleagues will be shared.
